Using Dropbox

On-line Transfer Method for Documents/Tax Return

Here are the steps for remote tax preparation for clients who do not visit the office, opt to receive a digital copy of their return, or are sending me documents before an in-office meeting.

1) File Request Link: Sending me documents

I'll email you a file request (upload-only) link allowing you to send documents to a secure folder; you don't need a Dropbox account. If you have an account, you can simply share your folder with me.

2) Download Link: Receiving your tax return

For clients reviewing before our wrap-up meeting, or fully remote:

I'll email you a unique download link with a password that will be something known by you, to access a folder which I've created and uploaded your tax return. Naturally at this point I'll provide a full explanation of the results, and clients who would like to further review the details together, we can schedule a phone call/Zoom meeting.

Signing online:

You'll receive instructions allowing you to access and digitally sign the efile authorization form(s) online.

Please do not send back the tax return nor any pages of the tax return, that's your copy to keep. Signing the tax return itself is not authorization for efiling!

I automatically receive a notification when you sign; no need to have me confirm it. You can download your signed authorization pages via your confirmation email, but likely will never need them.

And of course, clients wishing to receive a paper version, I can mail the tax return via USPS Priority Mail for a nominal charge.

Additional notes:

Once you upload, I place you in my 'queue'. Turnaround time usually reaches 2 weeks by start of March, 3 weeks by mid-March; I will update clients to this timetable as needed.

Clients who need to send an occasional document and attach it to an email, that's fine. But if you're sending many documents in sequence for tax preparation, do not attach to your emails...this creates more likelihood I may miss an attachment due to the number of emails I receive and it's much easier for you to drag/drop or select files to upload using same file request link, neatly in one location.

Not all clients have their documents in digital form or it's too cumbersome; certainly you can mail or physically drop off your paperwork. Whichever method is easier for you!

I keep your tax returns in your Dropbox folder for three years. Please save your download link so you may access the returns if needed in the future. Your initial upload link is somewhat temporary but I have a general-purpose upload link if you ever need to send me something later on.

If any clients prefer to have their returns deleted from Dropbox once you download, please let me know and I will do so.

Paying the tax prep online:

I'll include the specifics in the email when I send you the download link, but I accept payment via Zelle, Venmo, Paypal and by credit/debit. Personal checks mailed to me are fine as well.

Thank you!
